Report of the September 21, 2004
Meeting of Classis Hamilton
Held at Calvary Christian Reformed Church, Flamborough
Early in the meeting, Classis Hamilton adopted the mission statement of its taskforce on revisioning. The thrust of this mission statement is captured in three purposes statements which express a common calling (1) to provide mutual encouragement, (2) to engage in shared ministry, and (3) to be an environment of mutual accountability for each other as member churches. Classis then broke up into four discussion groups to brain storm and suggest ways in which Classis could behave differently in the areas of prayer, training opportunities, sharing of ministry stories, and Classis-wide worship so that this first purpose of mutual encouragement might be achieved. Later in the day, Classis members had time to view, ponder and prioritize in a preliminary way the ideas recorded in each of the four groups. Future Classis meetings will feature more such sessions aimed at re-structuring and renewing the work of Classis in its kingdom mission.
Throughout the day, Classis heard many significant reports. Jerry Hoytema shared how the international radio ministry of the Back to God Hour through such pastors as French-speaking Paul Mpundi in West Africa was bearing much fruit. John Meiboom shared about the changing face of the Institute for Christian Studies and encouraged Classis Hamilton churches to support its work on the basis of its Reformed orientation, the caliber of its current students and the quality of its alumni. Peter Mantel of Bethel Waterdown shared his resources called Relationships Anonymous for mentoring those with addictions in our communities. Chris Burghuis promoted the cross Canada bike tour celebrating the 100th anniversary of the CRC in this country. John Gilson from the Classical Abuse Response Team updated delegates on available resources and gave indication that the Team was currently being meaningfully employed by churches within the Classis. Rick Verkerk, chair of the Classical Home Missions Committee, expanded on information shared at the previous Classis meeting concerning the disbanding of the Hamilton Asian Christian Church (HACC) due to viability concerns and the recent resignation of pastor Nhai from the New Life CRC.
Perhaps the most difficult decision Classis faced was rather late in the day. Ancaster Fellowship CRC requested support from Classis for a temporary exemption from full ministry-share responsibility due to their current unusual circumstances. An elder delegate from this congregation shared with Classis their sense of calling to establish a ministry presence in the Meadowlands by building upon land recently purchased there, but also their tremendous financial burden over the near future to see this vision to reality. Classis took the recommendation of its advisory committee and judged Ancaster Fellowship’s position to be indeed "unusual". In turn, Classis voted to assume certain percentages of Ancaster Fellowship’s shortfalls in classical ministry shares for next five years. Classis, however, was not willing to assume any responsibility for Ancaster Fellowship’s denominational ministry shares.
The next Classis meeting is slated for January 18,
2005 at First Hamilton CRC downtown. The agenda deadline is December 7, 2004.
